I exist in grayscale now.
I can only watch from afar, and only in the dark.
I see them move among the living and dead, only they can't see what I can.
When they are too late to save a life, that's when I step in, beckoning those souls to me. They're grayscale, too, by the time that happens.
When the almost-dead are deciding whether to stay or go, I urge them to remain within the light.
Where my brothers cannot go, I do.
In a way, I'm still working with them, only they would see me as nothing but a negative of reality. A bright white-and-black version of myself when they blink, only to look again and not see me at all.
They would think they were losing their minds.
But that's what happens when you get trapped halfway between. When you stubbornly refuse to move into death, but are too far gone to remain alive.
They lost me, though they never found my body. That, I retained in this strange existence I now have for eternity.
I will never be able to show myself to them. Not until their moment comes, when they find it's their time to go. Then, I will stand by, I will hold my arms open wide, and I will welcome them.
Then, they won't be afraid.
One by one, they'll join me.
And we'll carry on our work into eternity, just the other side of where human eyes can go.
