These drabbles were written in
response to the 2006 Tracy Island Writers Forum's Drabble
Challenge. The
challenge was as follows:
Choose three of the following
six topics and write one drabble for each of the topics you
chose. You will wind up with three 100-word drabbles on
whichever three topics you chose. Here are your choices:
A)
Scott during a rescue (could be his thoughts, someone
observing him, something he's actually doing, etc.).
B)
Virgil while playing the piano (again, could be his thoughts,
someone observing/listening, etc.).
C)
Gordon's and Alan's relationship as brothers (one or both of
them thinking about it, one of them thinking about the other,
someone else ruminating on their relationship, etc.).
D)
Lady Penelope (either her thoughts or someone else's about
her/what she does, etc.).
E)
The Thunderbirds (perhaps the ship's actual POV or someone's
thoughts about one or all of them, etc.).
F)

Drabble
One
For
Drabble A
Faith.
Sometimes that's all you have to go on. Damned if I know how
we get out of these situations sometimes. I know I can't take
credit for their work. Sure, I can tell them what to do and
where to go. But it's their sheer willpower half the time that
saves the day – or the life. I may be field commander, and I
may fly Thunderbird One, but as I watch the Mole break through
the earth, as I see Virgil's dirty face appear in my
viewscreen, I know what really makes us successful. Them. My
brothers: International Rescue.

Two
For
Drabble D
They stand
there silent and grave. Grief and tears in their eyes. They
watch me through the viewscreen, helpless as they stand too
far away to do what they do best – for in this situation, they
will not succeed. There is one life they will not save. My
most trusted friend Parker is already dead and as I hear the
barrel of the pistol twist, I grieve not for my own life about
to be lost – but for the guilt I know will plague Jeff and his
sons forever. For this, I am sorry that they must watch me
die.

Three
For
Drabble E
I take him
down there. Down where there's no light unless I give it. Down
where he would die if I weren't solid and safe. Where no
others can go. I've found bodies of animals, of children, of
young adults, of the elderly. Yet for all the destruction I've
witnessed, I've seen even more of miracles, survival, bravery
and heroic measures. I've seen my pilot, the one who knows me
best and loves me most, risk his very life for strangers. I
dive into the depths of the ocean to save lives, but above
all, I bring Gordon home. Alive. |
